The Drift Bar in Southsea is the venue for Bailando every Thursday run by DALE Afro Latin Entertainment from 10pm to 3am. When I arrive around 10pm for the salsa dancing upstairs there are usually plenty of people who attended the earlier bachata lessons from 8:30 to 10pm staying on for an hour or so to practice to bachata music. Around 11pm salsa is added to the mix and people start coming up from downstairs particularly when it get crowded. Members of The Portsmouth University Salsa Club usually arrive around 11pm.
Kasia Rajka and members of her Salsa Cubana Portsmouth group have recently arrived around 10pm to practice their rueda & cubana skills downstairs before going upstairs.
Salsa tracks have been starting earlier than 11pm and played more often which is most welcome to those of us who prefer the real thing! 😉
Sometimes there are not so many staying on from the earlier bachata lesson.
Sometimes many ladies come up later for a dance or two.
Sometimes the room empties around 11:30 and sometime people stay until much later.
This means the event is a bit of a mystery tour which makes it exciting whatever happens!
It used to be a free mystery tour before 11pm – £2 after – but now it costs £2 from 10pm onwards. It’s still good value for money though!
Parking: There’s plenty of parking round the back in the Ashby Place car park.

Philip Wake There was a kind of madness on the crowded dance floor upstairs at Drift last night – an electric party atmosphere which was well fed by excellent tracks played by DALE Afro Latin Entertainment – initially bachata music for those who had done the bachata lesson. I had a bachata with so many ladies I lost count and then the salsa music kicked in when the lovely DJ Hazel took over so that Edyta and I could burn the floor several times together and raise a cheer or two for our efforts. I had some delightful salsa dances with many other ladies too and then a birthday girl wanted to dance a salsa for the first time after I gave her first bachata which is relatively easy to lead. She did very well and made me smile when she exclaimed afterwards that dancing with me had made her birthday complete! 🙂 🎂❤️
