2019-11-01: Que Rico Salsa Party at White Eagle Club Balham!

Miguel Mayana runs this salsa event in Balham at the White Eagle Club (aka Hamilton House) on the first Friday of every month. It is a welcome rebirth of the Que Rico event which used to run on the 2nd Friday of each month at The Bedford in Balham last year until it had to be closed for refurbishment. This venue has a luxurious ballroom for salsa dancing – big enough for 500 dancers I’d say. The bachata area is quite small but adequate for those who prefer sideways salsa! πŸ˜‰ The ballroom has air conditioning which works, a professional sound system and a stage for the DJ which is always an advantage.

Que Rico means to a Spanish speaking salsa dancer something like: Isn’t it wonderful! It is indeed and as before the venue has a friendly atmosphere and attracts all the best dancers from miles around thus guaranteeing me my salsa fix many times over in one evening!  I plan to arrive at 10pm for the social dancing after the earlier bachata & salsa lessons.

Venue: White Eagle Club at Hamilton House, 211 Balham High Road, Balham, London SW17 7BQ

Parking: Plenty of free parking in Balham High Road and side streets after 7pm.

Tube & Rail: Balham Station is only 6 minutes walk away

Tickets: Β£10

  • Philip Wake I danced with a lady who said almost immediately: β€œI don’t think I can dance with you!” I was confused but observed that we didn’t seem to be connecting. She ran off but came back a minute later saying: β€œLets try again!” We did and this time we connected. She said that the first time she just seemed to be on the wrong foot . . .” to which I added: β€œand you panicked didn’t you!” β€œI did,” she replied with a smile which intimated that she was glad that I had understood. β€œWell done for coming back and giving it another go!” She smiled and we proceeded to have a perfectly good dance! β€οΈ Like: Maayan Estrajch

  • Philip Wake Tonight there was a special magic in the air which seemed to make the party buzz like nobody’s business. I had lots of dances but having arrived home at 06:45 after taking Maayan back home 15 miles northwards before heading 85 miles southwards and having a bit of a sleep on the way back to Gosport I can only remember my dances with Karina who I had not danced with for a long time. Our last dance was particularly well connected and energetic and I remember saying to a guy wanting a dance from her when we finished: “I think she needs a rest after dancing with me!” I wobbled a few times walking down the room before I realised that I needed a rest after dancing with her so took 15 minutes out to recover! β€οΈ Like: John Lets Salsa Hylton; Laugh: Karina Perez

  • Philip Wake Everybody seemed to like my skeleton mask which fitted my face perfectly. I amended it for safe breathing with larger nose holes and a slit for the mouth and could actually wear my glasses over the mask to read! As I was taking a selfie a lovely young lady popped into the picture! πŸ™‚ Like: John Lets Salsa Hylton

  • Karizma Delpratt Aww Philip; what lovely things to say. You know, Que Rico would not be Que Rico without you. Thank you so much for helping out with my beginners class. It is so much appreciated. πŸŒŸπŸŽ΅πŸŽΆπŸ’ƒπŸ•Ί Love: Philip; Like: John Lets Salsa Hylton
