I bought this Universal Mobile Phone Holder from the Fareham Market a couple of months ago for what I thought was a good price – £5 – but clearly not as good as available on eBay! Lol. It seemed very clever because of the numerous ways that it could be used and the way it folded down to look like a mouse. I chose to mount it on my windscreen next to my rear view mirror as the place least likely to disturb my driving and discovered that the suction cap was so good that using the so called quick release mechanism didn’t always if ever lead to the device being quickly released. Because it looks like a mouse I decided to leave it in place permanently. It held my Samsung Smartphone reasonably though not very firmly so I wasn’t very pleased with it and then the phone started falling off. I eventually noticed that one of the rubber grommets was missing which meant that the phone could not be held as securely as it should be. The grommets are shaped with an angle which forces the phone into the holder but one grommet doesn’t work very well!
I took the phone back to the original market place stall and the owner did not hesitate to swap it for another holder which worked really well holding the phone very firmly! However, after a week or so one of the grommets fell out! I searched all over the car but couldn’t find it anywhere.
I didn’t get round to taking it back again and made do with holding the phone on by means of an elastic band but it suddenly occurred to me today that I could remove the remaining grommet, cut it in half, cut the top half to be the same shape as the bottom half and use that one for the other side. This worked very well – just as good as when as there were two full sized grommets!
The picture on the left is the template I used to cut the grommet at the apex and reshape the left hand piece to produce two identical half grommets. The picture on the right shows them glued into place.
Thinking outside the box you could say or sideways thinking!
