On This Day 43 Years Ago – Bahamas’ sun sets on British Empire!
On 9th July 1973 300 years of British sovereignty came to an end as the Bahamas celebrated their first day of independence.
The Bahamas was the site of Columbus' first landfall in the New World in 1492. At that time these Caribbean islands were inhabited by the Lucayan, a branch of the Arawakan-speaking Taino people.
